A Baseball Recruiting Checklist

The recruiting process can feel overwhelming without structure. With multiple moving parts and long timelines, it’s easy for families to feel behind or unsure of what to do next. A well-organized checklist helps families stay proactive, focused, and confident throughout the recruiting journey.

Key items to include on your recruiting checklist:

  • Build and update your profile

Create a complete recruiting profile that includes accurate personal information, academic data, metrics, and baseball experience. Update it regularly as grades, test scores, statistics, and physical development change.

  • Research schools and programs

Identify schools that match your academic, athletic, and personal goals. Look beyond the logo and level to understand roster needs, coaching stability, level of competition, location, opportunities for playing time, and other factors that are important to you.

  • Create a highlight and game video

Develop a concise, high-quality highlight video that clearly showcases tools and skills. Supplement it with full game footage so coaches can evaluate consistency, instincts, and game awareness.

  • Communicate with college coaches

Consistent and professional communication is critical. Send personalized emails, provide updates, respond promptly, and maintain ongoing dialogue with programs that show interest.

  • Attend appropriate events

Choose showcases, camps, and tournaments that align with your current recruiting stage and target schools. Attending the right events is more effective than attending more events. Attending events that do not align with a player’s recruiting goals and level of ability often results in wasted time and financial resources, with little to no return.

  • Track academic eligibility

Monitor GPA, core courses, and standardized test requirements. Staying strong academically expands recruiting options and prevents last-minute issues that can limit opportunities.

  • Evaluate offers and overall fit

When opportunities arise, evaluate the full picture. Take into account academics, baseball development, coaching style, campus environment, and long-term goals; not just the level or scholarship amount.

Consistency matters more than speed. Players and families who manage the process steadily and intentionally are more likely to avoid unnecessary stress and make informed decisions.
